Spoonful of Dirt

“Human beings did not invent stories. We arrived inside of them. We are told by geological stories with scales too large for us to even grasp. We are infected with fungal stories. Civilization itself may be a non-human narrative, authored by fermentation yeasts using humans as its characters. Let us write stories that seek to be as textured, complicated, and diverse as an old-growth forest. As feral and involuted as a spoonful of dirt holding one billion bacteria, up to ten miles of mycelial fungi, and thousands of protozoa.”-

Spoonful of Dirt was founded in 2023, to work mainly on Spectres of a Shared Future Project which we will finally complete and exhibit in June 2026 as part of PHI public engagement art residency! We were so honoured and surprised that this project was selected and feel so lucky to be participating in this very supportive community facing residency . Previous workshops that were given as part of this project took place at RECLAIM literacy, St Gabriel’s Elementary,Champs Des Possibles, Falaise St Jacques, OPTICA Jeunesse, and C-Change conference, and we thank the artist-participants from those workshops for their generosity in how they engaged in the project- this project is so informed by their contributions. We are so excited to see what the artist-participants that we collaborate with during this residency produce!

“The PHI Montreal residency, carried out in partnership with the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ)invites one artist residing in the Greater Montreal area and one artist residing in Quebec outside of the Greater Montreal area to collaborate with PHI on public engagement projects. Artists are asked to imagine, develop, and present projects built on collaborative or co-creation processes, in which communities are involved in the ideation, production, and final presentation. Supported by PHI’s expertise and resources, the selected artists will work to rethink the dialogue between their practices, institutions, and audiences. At the end of the PHI Montreal residency, artists will be invited to present their work or research findings in a public space located on PHI’s ground floor. This presentation may take various forms: showcases, events,
discussions, performances, workshops, or any other format suited to the project. The aim is not only to track the artistic process, but also to highlight tangible results and the project’s lasting impact on partner communities and audiences.”
